Indoor pickleball is the same game on the same 20 x 44 lines, but it doesn’t play the same. The ball is softer, the floor is different, the room is quieter and there’s no wind to blame. October is when outdoor regulars in North Jersey and New York start booking gym nights and club courts, and this fall the local map is moving. One new club opens this week and another is due in November, weeks after a big indoor facility closed. This guide covers what changes when you move inside, the three kinds of indoor courts you’ll choose between, what to bring, and where to look next.

What changes when pickleball moves indoors

FactorIndoorsWhy it matters
BallIndoor balls use larger holes and softer plastic, with a duller bounce (My Pickleball Connect, 2026). The Franklin X-26 has 26 holes and weighs 26 g (Pickleball Central). ONIX’s Fuse Indoor is a USAPA-approved update to the Pure 2 with a slightly lower bounce (Pickleball Central).Rallies slow down and touch matters more. Your outdoor ball is the wrong tool on a gym floor.
FloorAnything from community-center hardwood to cushioned club surfacing. L.B.F. Pickleball Club, for example, says every court is a cushioned Laykold Masters surface.Footing and bounce change. Check the floor before you buy shoes or blame your hands.
SoundIndoor balls run quieter. One 2026 review describes the X-26’s “quieter pop than outdoor balls” (FORWRD).Shared gyms and neighbors both appreciate it.
ShoesMany facilities prefer non-marking court rubber.Ask about shoe rules before league night.
SpaceThe lines are 20 x 44 ft. USA Pickleball’s guidance, as players quote it, is at least 30 x 60 ft of total space.A gym with tight walls plays smaller than the lines suggest.
Checklist framing. Product specs are from retailer and manufacturer pages, not PBN testing.

Players feel it right away. In a September r/Pickleball thread about indoor options in Seattle, one reply summed up community-center play like this:

It’s also a weird game because of the super slow ball and wooden floors.

Three kinds of indoor pickleball courts

Picking an indoor home is closer to picking a gym than picking a park. Think of it as three doors.

Door 1: the rec-center or community gym night

This is the cheapest way in, and usually the hardest to get on the schedule. In the same Seattle thread, another player put it plainly: “The cheapest locations will be community centers, but availability is pretty limited.” Expect wooden floors, lines that share the room with other sports, and a slower game. It’s a good fit for casual players and beginners who want reps without a membership.

Door 2: the dedicated pickleball club

Here you’re paying for true courts, reservations and programming. L.B.F. Pickleball Club in Bridgewater is a fresh local example. Its site lists 10 reservable courts: 8 full courts at 30 x 60 ft with 8 ft back and 5 ft side buffers, plus 2 compact courts for drills and lessons. Booking runs through CourtReserve. On its founding-member offer the club lists $1,440 a year, against a regular Elite annual price of $1,969 (lbfpickleball.com, checked Oct 5, 2026). That’s the trade: real space and a front desk, at a real price.

Whether that price is fair is a live argument. In a Sep 23 r/Pickleball thread about getting kids into the sport, the top reply said, “Indoor facilities are for profit. Of course it’ll be expensive,” and pointed families to parks and rec programs. Another player did the math on one lesson package, $420 for 12 hours or about $35 an hour, and asked whether that’s really unfair once you count facility costs and a private instructor.

Door 3: the multi-sport club

Pickleball plus padel, simulators and recovery under one roof. The Club at Marlboro (414 Texas Road, Morganville) plans to open in November with nine indoor pickleball courts, two padel courts, three Trackman golf simulators, a recovery lounge, gym and sauna, according to Patch (Sep 22, 2026). It’s the second location after The Club at Monroe. This door suits players who want their pickleball night to double as a social or fitness night.

Indoor pickleball court dimensions and shared gym lines

An indoor court uses the same 20 x 44 ft lines as an outdoor one. The difference is the room around it. A September r/PickleballAfterWork post laid out the math: USA Pickleball calls for at least 30 x 60 ft of total space and recommends 34 x 64 for a new court. Purpose-built clubs plan for that. Gyms don’t always. If the back wall is close, your lob defense gets shorter, and if pickleball lines sit on top of other markings, agree on which line is which before the first serve.

What to bring to indoor pickleball

  • Court shoes, not runners. Indoor venues often expect non-marking soles. Our pickleball shoes guide for indoor season covers what to look for.
  • An indoor ball, if the venue doesn’t supply one. Ask what the club stocks first so your practice matches league night. A 2026 ball roundup calls the ONIX Fuse Indoor the most common indoor tournament ball and the default for most indoor leagues its writer knows (My Pickleball Connect).
  • Glasses, if you wear them outdoors. Indoor lighting is a different problem from sun. On Oct 5 an r/Pickleball player asked which lens works for indoor play, so you’re not the only one wondering.
  • Your paddle and a backup grip. Same paddle, new ball. Give yourself a few games to adjust.

Most of that list ships easily ahead of your first booked night.

How to find indoor pickleball courts near you

Searching “indoor pickleball courts near me” gets you a map full of pins. Sort them by door. For gym nights, check your town recreation department and community-center schedules, and expect limited slots. For clubs, look at the reservation system (many use CourtReserve) and the posted membership tiers. In North Jersey, start with our North Jersey courts guide, then compare club options in 5 Best Pickleball Clubs in Northern New Jersey.

North Jersey indoor moves this fall

  • Opening: L.B.F. Pickleball Club, 3 Chimney Rock Rd., Bridgewater. Grand opening Saturday, Oct 10, with a ribbon cutting from 9 to 10 a.m. (Somerset County Business Partnership calendar; lbfpickleball.com).
  • Coming in November: The Club at Marlboro, 414 Texas Road, Morganville, with nine indoor pickleball courts and two padel courts (Patch, Sep 22, 2026).
  • Closed: PickleRage abruptly closed its new 18-court indoor facility in Plainfield (nj.com, Sep 25, 2026).

Net effect: indoor supply in the region is shifting, not just growing. If you lost a home court in September, it’s worth trying a new door this month before winter leagues fill up.

Verdict + who this isn’t for

VerdictTreat indoor pickleball as its own game: softer ball, different floor, tighter rooms. Choose your door on purpose. Gym nights for cheap reps, a dedicated club for a real home court, a multi-sport club if you want the whole evening. Bring court shoes and ask what ball they play.

Indoor pickleball FAQ

Is indoor pickleball different from outdoor?

The court lines are the same, but indoor play uses a softer ball with larger holes on hardwood or cushioned club surfaces, with no wind. Players often describe it as slower and more touch-driven.

Do I need different balls for indoor pickleball?

Yes. Indoor balls such as the ONIX Fuse Indoor and Franklin X-26 are built for indoor floors. If your venue supplies balls, practice with the same model.

What shoes should I wear for indoor pickleball?

Court shoes with good lateral support, and non-marking soles where the venue asks for them. Running shoes are the wrong tool.
