Quick answer (verified 2026-10-09): Manhattan is short on free pickleball. NYC Parks lists only 5 dedicated courts: Carl Schurz Park (3) and James J. Walker Park (2), and neither needs a tennis permit. Your best free bet is Hudson River Park's interim courts near Pier 76: free, first come, first served, open 6 AM to 1 AM. Indoors, CityPickle Times Square has 7 courts. CityPickle's 14 outdoor courts at Wollman Rink are closed for the season.
Manhattan, in one paragraph
On an island where a parking space costs more than a paddle collection, a dedicated public pickleball court is rare. The upside is that what Manhattan has is easy to reach: Pier 76 on the West Side, Carl Schurz on the Upper East Side, J.J. Walker in the West Village. The downside is the line. For most Manhattan players, the real answer is a mix: free courts when the weather's nice, indoor clubs when it isn't, and a willingness to take the 7 train to LIC.
Data notes. Riverside Park, Howard Bennett Playground and William E. Passannante Ballfield are tagged with pickleball pitches in OpenStreetMap. They aren't on NYC Parks' pickleball list, so we've marked them unverified. They may be shared or temporary lines. Hudson River Park doesn't publish a court count. The "4" and lights come from OpenStreetMap. Hell's Kitchen Pickleball Club describes itself as "a private members-only community" and is not open to drop-ins.

Pier 76 rules worth knowing
Hudson River Park's posted rules for the interim courts: courts are first come, first served on an honor system. At least two players must be on each court. When all courts are full, a line forms. Only non-skid shoes are allowed. No lessons, leagues or camps, no pets, no food, no chairs or tables. The courts are interim: they're there until the permanent park is built.
Clubs, leagues and groups
CityPickle Times Square (city-pickle.com): seven courts, a full bar and a restaurant at 1501 Broadway. Clinics, open play, leagues and tournaments.

Volo Sports NYC pickleball (volosports.com): social leagues in neighborhoods including Chelsea, the Lower East Side, Murray Hill and Gramercy, and the Upper East Side.
Hell's Kitchen Pickleball Club (hellskitchenpickleball.com): private, members only. 660 12th Ave, 7th floor.
NYC Pickleball (nycpickleball.com): citywide community, lessons and events.
Tips for Manhattan players
Go early or late at Pier 76. It's open 6 AM to 1 AM, so off-peak hours exist. Use them.
Wollman Rink is seasonal. CityPickle's page says "Closed for the Season" as of October 9. Download their app to catch the reopening.
Brooklyn and LIC are close. Leif Ericson (13 courts, Brooklyn) and the LIC indoor cluster (Queens) are often easier than waiting in Midtown.
Non-skid shoes. They're required at Pier 76 and a good idea everywhere. See our indoor shoe guide.
