Pickleball in NYC, Borough by Borough: Courts and Clubs That Actually Get Used

New York City is five pickleball scenes sharing one subway map. The NYC Parks pickleball directory lists dedicated courts in every borough. The 2026 community guide lists the painted playgrounds, Slack channels, and rec-center gyms that never make that directory. Clubs fill the hours Parks cannot: rain, dark, winter, and anyone who wants a booking instead of a rumor.

This is piece two in our NY / NJ / CT courts-and-clubs series — the five-borough chapter. Not every playground with tape. The courts and clubs you actually plan a trip around, plus the traps.

Manhattan — small Parks list, huge scene

Parks only lists two Manhattan pickleball sites: Carl Schurz Park (3 courts, East River) and James J. Walker Park (2 courts, West Village). If that were the whole island, Manhattan would be a footnote. It isn’t.

Free and late: Hudson River Park’s interim courts near Pier 76 are the workhorse — free, 6:00 AM–1:00 AM, first-come, no permit for regular play, one hour when others are waiting, two players per court, no leagues or lessons on those courts. Temporary until permanent park is built. Bring non-skid shoes and patience.

The postcard: CityPickle at Wollman Rink — 14 courts, 830 Fifth Avenue, listed hours 8 a.m.–9 p.m. Community play has been $5; clinics $20. As of this writing the page is taking bookings and also flagging evening closures (6–9 p.m. on September 8, 14, 15, 22, 29). The rink still has an ice life. Treat Wollman as seasonal and check the calendar the morning you go.

The painted circuit: Riverside Park (community guide: 5 dedicated asphalt courts with nets), Roosevelt Island, St. Vartan, Houston & 6th, the LES playgrounds. Many need a portable net (BYON). Summer evenings get permitted for other sports — use the Parks field-and-court map before you assume 6 p.m. is yours. Central Park North Meadow handball courts were listed closed for construction in the 2024/26 community guide; do not treat them as a default.

Indoor / league: Chelsea Piers Field House runs adult pickleball leagues (their Field House page currently points to Volo). Rec centers tape courts onto gym floors — Gertrude Ederle (W 60th), Constance Baker Motley (E 54th), Alfred E. Smith, Jackie Robinson, Highbridge — membership required, schedules posted by center. Court 16 also runs pickleball out of its FiDi tennis club; it is a tennis business that added pickle, not a dedicated pickleball warehouse.

Brooklyn — the Parks volume plus a club that feels like Brooklyn

On the official list, Brooklyn is the heavyweight. Leif Ericson Park in Sunset Park is the largest Parks-listed pickleball number in the city (13 courts). John J. Carty Park in Bay Ridge has 4 dedicated courts (the community guide still calls this the city’s first fully dedicated public installation). Linden Park 4, Breukelen 3, Winthrop 2.

What Parks does not list: Marine Park’s eight dedicated courts — the community guide’s model of a neighborhood group that went from lines-on-tennis to a real installation, bathrooms and parking included. McCarren Park in Williamsburg is the opposite: 10+ painted courts, rough surface, weeds, approximate lines, and permits that eat evenings. Kaiser Park in Coney Island (4 dedicated). Ericsson Playground and Hattie Carthan if you live nearby and bring a net.

The club: PKLYN at 80 4th Street, Gowanus. Five indoor courts plus a dink court, bar and lounge, Carroll Street F/G. Visit page hours: Sun–Thu 6 a.m.–10 p.m., Fri–Sat 6 a.m.–12 a.m. Drop-in from $25/2 hours; private court $110/hour non-member. Membership not required. Street parking is thin; they tell you to take the train.

Brooklyn rule: south and west Brooklyn can live on dedicated Parks courts. North Brooklyn still mixes painted asphalt and a warehouse club. Do not conflate McCarren with Carty.

Queens — LIC is the indoor capital; Parks is the spread

Queens has the widest Parks footprint: Alley Athletic, Archie Spigner, Crocheron, Dutch Kills, Farm, Francis Lewis, Holy Cow, Louis Pasteur, Springfield, Roy Wilkins (4), Rockaway Beach (1). Dutch Kills (2 courts, 36th/37th Avenues) is the LIC-adjacent public option. Roy Wilkins in St. Albans is the southeast Queens hub, with rec-center indoor in the cold months.

The clubs sit in Long Island City. Gotham Pickleball at 5-25 46th Avenue is open: 4 indoor courts, 5:00 AM–2:00 AM. Peak court rental $110/hour non-member; weekday open play $20 for two hours. A second site at Hunters Point (52-37 2nd Street) — 8 courts, 6 indoor / 2 outdoor — is still billed as opening early September 2026. Today is September 10. Their Hunters Point page is still a launch page, not a “now open” page. Book the original LIC club until they say otherwise.

Court 16 also books pickleball in LIC. Rec centers: Al Oerter, Lost Battalion Hall. The community guide previously flagged Astoria Park courts closed for construction — verify current status; do not assume 2024 notes still hold.

Queens rule: if you want guaranteed indoor, LIC. If you want free outdoor and you live east, use the Parks list and pick a neighborhood, not a pilgrimage to Manhattan.

The Bronx — Parks, local, not a club circuit (yet)

Five Parks sites: Crotona (2), Pelham Bay / Orchard Beach (4 — the borough’s biggest Parks number), Riverdale Playground (1), Van Cortlandt (1, accessible), Williamsbridge Oval (2). The community guide still treats Van Cortlandt as a one-court painted corner with room to grow.

No dedicated indoor pickleball club showed up in this reporting the way Gotham and PKLYN do. Rec-center gym time and those Parks courts are the Bronx scene for now. That is not a slight. It is a planning fact: if you are coming from Manhattan for a “Bronx club,” you will be disappointed. If you live in Norwood or Throggs Neck, Pelham Bay and Williamsbridge are the near-me answer.

Staten Island — a real community, two Parks sites, indoor at the JCC

Parks lists Fairview Park (3 dedicated, accessible) and Cottages Hill / New Brighton (4 dedicated, accessible). The community guide describes Fairview as a 100-player community that sometimes runs lights and winters at the Staten Island JCC on Manor Road (3 indoor courts). That is the SI pattern in one sentence: dedicated outdoor when the weather works, a rec/JCC gym when it does not.

You will not stumble on SI pickleball from a Midtown hotel. You go because you live there, or because someone invited you.

Rec centers vs clubs vs Parks — pick before you leave the house

• Parks dedicated courts — free, nets often in place at the bigger sites (Carty, Leif Ericson, Fairview). First-come. Weather.
• Painted / BYON — lines without a building. Bring a net or join a group that does.
• Rec centers — cheap annual membership, taped gym floors, posted weekly hours. The winter safety net if you will not pay club rates.
• Clubs — Gotham (LIC), PKLYN (Gowanus), CityPickle (Wollman, seasonal), Chelsea Piers leagues, Court 16 pickle add-on. You pay for a reservation and HVAC.

Randall’s Island / Sportime has hosted big pickleball and still shows tournament listings, but Sportime has also published a shift away from rec pickleball at that site. Do not treat it as a drop-in public court without reading their current programming.

What’s next

North Jersey — Essex, Hudson, Bergen: park courts, Montclair / Fair Lawn / Wayne indoor, and which Tuesday nights are actually bookable. Then Westchester / Long Island, then Connecticut.

Questions people ask

Do I need a permit to play?

Not for regular play on Hudson River Park’s interim courts or on Parks dedicated courts. Playgrounds are a different story: they get permitted to other sports on summer evenings, so check the Parks field-and-court map before you assume 6 p.m. is yours.

Where is indoor play guaranteed?

Long Island City (Gotham) and Gowanus (PKLYN) book courts by the hour and run open play; rec centers tape courts onto gym floors on posted schedules and need a membership.

Is Wollman Rink year-round?

No. CityPickle’s 14 courts run when the rink is in pickleball season and the calendar already flags evening closures; the rink still has an ice life. Check the morning you go.
